Jackqueline Frost '3rd Year PhD Student


Jackqueline Frost has been selected as one of two fellows for the 2017-2018 Luigi Einaudi Fellowship for Dissertation Research from the Cornell Institute for European  Studies. This fellowship will support her nine-month archival research project, “Anti-Colonialist and Anti-Fascist Futures of the French Atlantic: An Intellectual History, 1924-1971,” for which she will consult archives
across France and in Martinique. Congratulations!



Alvaro Garrote Pascual

Alvaro Garrote Pascual '2nd Year PhD student


Alvaro Garrote Pascual was awarded the Michele Sicca Grant for Research in Europe by the Cornell Institute for European Studies for research on his project “Translation as Frontier: The Thirteenth Century in Southern Europe.” The grant will allow him to spend time in archives in Spain and Italy to research a corpus for his dissertation on borders and translation studies in the courts of Alfonso X and Frederick II. Congratulations!



Diana Garvin

Diana Garvin 'PhD Graduate


This year Diana received the Rome Prize in Modern Italian Studies as well as a postdoctoral fellowship at the Italian Academy at Columbia University. She has accepted the Rome Prize, and will spend the 2017-2018 academic year at the American Academy in Rome.  She will then join the faculty of the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Oregon as an Assistant Professor of Italian with a focus on Mediterranean Studies in Fall 2018.


Diana’s most recent publication “Singing Truth to Power” (Annali d’Italianistica, Fall 2016) received the 2017 Linkon and Russo Award for Best Published Article from the Working Class Studies Association.  This article uses diaries and work songs to examine the relationship between agricultural labor, birth control, and abortion in shaping women’s resistance to Fascism. Congratulations!
