Lecturer of Spanish Language

Overview

Annie Ornelles joined the Department of Romance Studies at Cornell University in Fall 2025 after completing her Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics at Georgetown University. She also holds an M.S. in Hispanic Linguistics from Georgetown and a B.A. in Spanish and English from Wake Forest University. Her research in discourse studies explores intersections of language, identity, and ideologies through the notion of the chronotope, with particular focus on minority-language dynamics in the Iberian Peninsula and rural populations.

From 2021-2023, she conducted her dissertation research in Galicia, Spain, as a Fulbright Research Grantee. Before arriving at Cornell, she taught Spanish at all levels at Georgetown, as well as serving as coordinator for the intermediate (2018–2020) and advanced (2023–2024) Spanish programs. She aims to make her classroom a fun and encouraging space for students to grow their motivation for language learning while improving communication and intercultural understanding.
