Literary Cartographies

Literary Cartographies trace and analyze the ebbs and flows of people, cultures, languages, and ideas that span colonial contexts, cosmopolitan routes, and so-called ‘peripheral’ spaces around the globe. Working both within national boundaries and traditions and across diverse literary landscapes—from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, crossing Transatlantic and Transpacific itineraries—the Department of Romance Studies connects and interrogates the world like few other disciplines. Encompassing Western Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, and beyond, our work traverses authochthonous, imperial, and diasporic terrains, examines representations of insularity, convergence, and absence, and explores consciousness, conflict, and contestation from the subject, to the city, to the climate.
